Dude (or Dudette), This Is Fun...!

Steve and I are bounding up toward Alaska. We are in the middle of British Columbia. I thought I would discuss briefly some strategies I have learned for a "rolling" fishing trip. Steve has his own tricks and techniques for this type of fishing. I'll discuss mine.

Equipment For A Quick Strike...

Equipment For A More Methodical Approach...

At the next stop, I needed something more traditional. A TFO 6 Weight Professional Series II is the rod for what I needed. This stop was a destination... the Stellako River. It is a 5-star trout river. We stayed two nights near this stream and fished it all day yesterday. It was very fast moving. I used the George Daniel Euro Nymphing technique to fish. I would flip my fly up stream, it would shoot down stream fast - really fast. I did this flipping technique for about 15 minutes and was starting to think I was going to get skunked. Then it happened... Bam! The trout hit it hard. As I pulled it in it lept and danced on the water's surface. It got off inches from my net, but that is ok. I tried the same technique with the Tenkara, I hooked one more trout. I finished the day with a small non-trout fish.

When we see promising water we pull over. We don't want to waste much time. I leap out of the truck and whip out a rod. I have two rods I use for these quick fishing experiences:

1) 14 foot Tenkara rod. At one stop we pulled up to the lakes shore. I whipped out the Tenkara rod and in 3 minutes I was fishing. At this lake I landed over 10 perch. Nothing larger was biting, so I collasped the rod and we were off to another spot.

2) Ryer Gear Telescoping Fly Rod: The next stop, I needed to get more distance that the Tenkara rod would provide. I streached out my 9 foot 5 weight telescoping rod for this situation. This rod is unique. The fly line is threaded through the pole. It's not a fantastic casting rod, but the fly is always tied on and it is quick to use. I cast at this lake near some lilly pads and landed 7 small perch. We packed up and headed to the next stop.

Adapt And Move...

So, there you have it. We are adapting to quick fishing on the road, and when we find a really good stream, we pause and work it a while. It's all great fun.

We packed up this morning and have set our course for the far western edge of British Columbia. Tomorrow, we enter a back-country road, BC Highway 37, that is suppose to have many fishing opportunities. So, we continue our journey north.

It is the charge of the North Louisiana Fly Fishers to afford to the general public and our members in particular, a better understanding of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying. We wish to perpetuate the sport as a most pleasurable and exciting fishing method and provide education, instructions and the opportunities for relaxation to the membership.

The North Louisiana Fly Fishers (NLFF) serves the Ark-La-Tex area surrounding Shreveport. As the closest cold water fishery, we consider the Little Missouri (Little Mo') river near Murfreesboro, AR our home waters. We also fish the local rivers and lakes. We even have a growing group of kayak fishermen that, as well as the local rivers and lakes, will fish the gulf coast marshes for some saltwater action!
