Breakfast is served…

...and it’s ME!

I awoke early. The sun sets but it never gets dark and gets brighter around 5:30 AM. I threw on my sweat suit and leaped out the door into the cool 39-degree, crisp mountain air. I began the trek to the bathroom/showers. It was about a 100 yard walk through some overgrowth, but the trail was clear. I almost felt like whistling as I strolled along.

When I got to the washroom which were next to the office, the lady at the counter exclaimed, “Did you just walk up here"?! “Yep”, I replied. Before I could give her a proper good morning greeting she shouts, “Get in here quick"! I scurry inside. “A big grizzly is stalking the campground this morning. Thank God you didn’t run into him." I’m glad I was heading to the showers because now I really needed to change my drawers.

“Brutis, get over here!”, the lady shouted down a hall. A scrawny mountain man with a beard appeared. “Go chase off that grizzly bear before our clientele get eaten.” Brutis grabbed a stick and ran out the door. I got the skinny on bear behavior while Brutis did his job. “Often they run away only to loop around and appear on the other side of the campground”, said the worried office worker.

I went and showered and when I came out, the office lady and Brutis were still concerned. “Brutis will escort you back to your camper. I don’t know where that hairy fellow is, but we aren’t taking any chances". As we walked the campground, my eyes darted to the left and right and straight ahead. I sized up Brutis. He could certainly run faster than me but he had big lumberjack boots on. Maybe I could outpace him if the bear lunges into view. But the bear remained elusive. Tucked away in the bushes somewhere, waiting for the next unsuspecting camper to stroll up to the showers.

But the Trip Must Go On...

More than Fishing On Our Minds...

As we arrived in Whitehorse, Steve and I have been 2 feet apart from each other for over 4,000 miles. Saturday, Steve had to run some errands so we parted from one another for about 3 and a half hours. I strolled downtown. Talked to interesting people. One guy was manning the worlds smallest fly shop. It was in an 8 x 13 trailer and it had every kind of fly fishing equipment in it, including intriguing fish stories. Then I went to the McBride Museum. It was fantastic. I got all the history of the Yukon, steamboat travel, how cities were established in this harsh tundra, the gold rush, and more. I also saw some beautiful artwork (Fox & Butterfly at top of page).

The trip continues with a nice variety of activities. Thanks for keeping up with us on the blog!

We had a dandy time fishing today. We hit 4 streams. I caught a nice Arctic Grayling in a beautiful fast flowing small river. We saw a grizzly bear crossing the road this morning. He was a big boy. We were in the truck though… he was more scared of us than we were of him. We also saw two beautiful swans with a baby on a calm mountain lake.

It is the charge of the North Louisiana Fly Fishers to afford to the general public and our members in particular, a better understanding of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying. We wish to perpetuate the sport as a most pleasurable and exciting fishing method and provide education, instructions and the opportunities for relaxation to the membership.

The North Louisiana Fly Fishers (NLFF) serves the Ark-La-Tex area surrounding Shreveport. As the closest cold water fishery, we consider the Little Missouri (Little Mo') river near Murfreesboro, AR our home waters. We also fish the local rivers and lakes. We even have a growing group of kayak fishermen that, as well as the local rivers and lakes, will fish the gulf coast marshes for some saltwater action!
