A Journey Through Whittier, Alaska

Our adventure began with a scenic detour through the mountains to reach the coastal town of Homer, Alaska. The drive took us through Whittier, a unique destination that can only be accessed through a one-lane tunnel carved through the mountain or from the sea. Either way you choose to arrive, the views are absolutely breathtaking.

As we made our way to Whittier, we were treated to a magnificent landscape filled with birds, glaciers, and stunning rock formations. The highlight of the drive was spotting an iceberg glistening in the sunlight. We took our time, stopping to absorb the beauty of nature surrounding us; it was the perfect start to our sightseeing day.

Discovering the Spit of Homer

After our journey through Whittier, we continued south to Homer, which is situated on a geographical feature known as a "spit." This land formation juts out into the water, creating a picturesque view that looks like a giant jetty. I playfully remarked to my travel companion, Scott, that the name "spit" was quite fitting; from above, it does resemble what you'd see after someone spat out a wad of tobacco!

Arriving in Homer, we found a lovely lagoon that’s cut off from the ocean during low tide. This lagoon is home to baby fry of king salmon that are stocked by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, allowing them to imprint on the area and return later to spawn. We, along with other hopeful anglers, cast our lines in a futile effort to fish in the lagoon, but luck eluded us again. And if you think we were kidding about snagging fish, they wouldn't put up a sign if it wasn't a thing!

After a day filled with exploration, it was time to indulge in some local cuisine. We found a charming spot to grab lunch and ordered the fresh halibut. Surprisingly, we learned that most of Alaska's seafood, apart from halibut, isn't necessarily fresh; much of it comes off a Cisco truck! This was a bit of a letdown given Alaska's thriving snow crab, king crab ($95.99/lb.) and clam harvesting industries.

As we dined on delicious halibut (fish tacos and fish & chips), the flavors were a highlight of our trip. It was the perfect way to unwind after our travels. Our leisurely day off from pulling the camper came to a close, and we returned to our campsite, filled with anticipation for our upcoming adventure to Denali National Park.

Homer, with its stunning spit, captivating lagoon, and mouthwatering seafood, offered a delightful experience in the heart of southern Alaska. If you're looking to explore the beauty of the Last Frontier, Homer should surely be on your bucket list!

The North Louisiana Fly Fishers (NLFF) serves the Ark-La-Tex area surrounding Shreveport. As the closest cold water fishery, we consider the Little Missouri (Little Mo') river near Murfreesboro, AR our home waters. We also fish the local rivers and lakes. We even have a growing group of kayak fishermen that, as well as the local rivers and lakes, will fish the gulf coast marshes for some saltwater action!
