Adventure Along the Beautiful Highway 37: A Journey Through British Columbia
SCOTT & STEVE'S ALASKAN ADVENTURE

Setting Off from Stellako River
After leaving the scenic Stellako River area, our grand adventure continued at the beginning of BC Highway 37. This was no ordinary highway; we were gearing up for a 450-mile, no cell service, trek into the heart of wilderness, completely cut off from the outside world. Straight north, mostly smooth, rough at times due to frost heaves, small shoulders, no shoulders, one-lane bridges and road construction due to winter damage were all in store for us on this portion of our journey. Our first stop was at Kitwanga, British Columbia, named after the Gitwangok Indian Band, where we found ourselves at the Kitwanga RV camp. The river here was raging with the powerful snow melt runoff, creating quite a sight – but unfortunately, it meant no fishing opportunities at this location.
A Hidden Gem at Tatogga RV Park
The next morning brought the excitement of heading north again. About halfway up Highway 37, we stumbled upon the Tatogga RV Park. The outside of this place didn't look like much, but after Scott ventured in, he quickly declared it a hidden gem. It featured a fabulous lounge area, a restaurant, and even a bakery! Taking a chance to stay the night instead of pushing further north was definitely the right call. Plus, the WiFi in the lounge allowed us to reconnect with our wives, who were curious about our adventures.

Exploring Jade City and Beyond
After a refreshing night’s sleep, our journey continued north. We came across a rustic little shop named Jade City, which was worth the stop. This charming store was filled with various jade rocks, jewelry, and delightful knick-knacks. The jade here is actually mined just 60 miles away, making it a genuine Canadian treasure. After soaking in the sights and stretching our legs, it was time to hit the road again.

Eventually, we reached the famed Alaska Highway, also known as Highway 1, entering the beautiful Yukon Territory. Our next stop was Nugget City and the Baby Nugget RV Park. It was a basic park with plenty of potential, but it was clear they were in the process of rebuilding after a devastating forest fire swept through the area. The remnants of burned trees were a stark reminder of nature's power.
This RV park also had limited WiFi, making outside contact a bit challenging. We did learn about a small lake some 12 kilometers down a path through the woods, which was supposedly good for fishing according to the park staff. We decided to take on the challenge and started to trek down, even though Scott opted out after a couple of minutes to avoid any potential bear encounters. As I moved further along the trail, I began to reconsider the long trek back, especially as I approached a challenging downward slope. "Nope!" my sixty-something-year-old self declared. Easier fishing opportunities would have to be sought elsewhere as our journey continued.
Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or a casual traveler, the adventure through BC Highway 37 is about much more than just the destinations. It’s about the experiences and memories made along the way in the stunning landscapes of British Columbia.
