A Scenic Drive from Watson Lake to Golden: Wildlife Encounters and Stunning Views

Embarking on the Journey

Driving from Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, to Golden, British Columbia, is nothing short of breathtaking. This route offers a visual feast, showcasing the majestic beauty of Canada’s wilderness. From sprawling forests to serene lakes, every twist and turn reveals a new postcard-perfect view. Buckle up as we share our recent adventure, filled with stunning scenery, a brush with wildlife, and some unforgettable moments.

Wildlife Encounters: A Close Call

As we navigated through this picturesque route, excitement was in the air. It was one of those days where nature seemed to put on a show, and we couldn’t wait to soak it all in. We were driving cautiously—a little too cautiously, perhaps—because the roads were slick with the light mist of rain falling around us. Suddenly, the serene drive took an unexpected turn.

Out of nowhere, we found ourselves slowing down behind a vehicle that was quickly coming to a stop . The tension rose as my brain quickly processed the situation. What should I do? My instinct kicked in; I pressed both the trailer brake and truck brakes, preparing for whatever might come next.

The Thrill of the Experience

And then, it happened. We spotted the reason for the unexpected halt—a bear crossing the road! My heart raced as I realized how close we were to having a dangerous encounter. In that split second, I had to make split-second decisions and was afraid of starting to slide on the wet roadway. In an effort to avoid a collision, I let off the trailer brake, stayed on the truck brakes, and veered around the stopped car just as the bear started to wander off the road. Just like that, we were back on the move, the adrenaline pumping.

What an exhilarating moment! We maintained enough control to navigate safely past—and all we got was a hilarious and thrilling dashcam video and a story rich with the thrill of unexpected nature. While I felt the urge to shake off the nerves, I couldn't help but smile, knowing we had just dodged quite a scare. Whew! What a close one!

Enjoying the Journey

Despite the close call, this drive remains one of my favorites. Each section of the route presented a new chance to appreciate nature's beauty, with wildlife peeking out from the greenery around us. As tourist season was in full swing, the popularity of the area definitely showed, but it was all part of the charm. From the stunning rocky terrains to the lush valleys, every moment was a reminder of the wonders that surround us in Canada.

The North Louisiana Fly Fishers (NLFF) serves the Ark-La-Tex area surrounding Shreveport. As the closest cold water fishery, we consider the Little Missouri (Little Mo') river near Murfreesboro, AR our home waters. We also fish the local rivers and lakes. We even have a growing group of kayak fishermen that, as well as the local rivers and lakes, will fish the gulf coast marshes for some saltwater action!
